Niassa · Ilha de Moçambique · Gurúè
Deep north cultural
The northern half of Mozambique most travellers never see. UNESCO islands, tea highlands, one of Africa's last wild reserves.
Overview
This is the long trip. Most clients who do it have been to Africa before and want something further on. Niassa Reserve, 42,000 sq km, almost empty of vehicles. Ilha de Moçambique — a tiny stone-and-coral island that was the country's first capital and is now a UNESCO heritage site, sleepy and beautiful. Gurúè in the Zambezia highlands, tea plantations on the slopes of Mount Namuli — at 2,419m the second-highest peak in Mozambique and a worthwhile multi-day hike. We fly between segments and overland the rest.
